| We were not expected to visit this sacred site until later, but because Tara, our Didi, could not catch a minibus to get home we took her by taxi, and her home is very close to Swayambhunath.
Swayambhunath, or the monkey temple, is among the oldest religious sites in Nepal.
Although the site is considered Buddhist, the place is revered by both Buddhists and Hindus.
The stupa consists of a dome at the base. Above the dome, there is a cubical structure with eyes of Buddha looking in all four directions. The dome at the base represents the entire world. When a person awakes (represented by eyes) from the bonds of the world, the person reaches a higher state.
These photos are from our trip on the way there and back, and show a typical day out in Kathmandu. There are so many wonderful characters everywhere, see for yourself...
